Tis the season for family, good food, laughter.....and possibly a cold or fall allergies. My family is dealing with it at this very moment. While the symptoms have to essentially run their course as various medications are taken with a cold, there are natural alternatives for getting relief for both in the meantime. My previous recipe was a bit more complex, so here are some simpler ways to get cold/allergy relief using essential oils when the season is upon you. I hope this post finds you well. I just woke up, rested, from a productive day yesterday. Since I started Zhi, one of my great...simple...adventures is to try new foods after a long day of work.
Last night, we tried Chicken Pitas. I sat down to plan out how they'd be made and asked the family for suggestions. I said, "What do you want to fill it with?" My kids looked up and said, "I have no idea... What do you recommend, mom?" (literally, just like that) Make your home warm and cozy for the holidays with DIY luminaries! This is an amazing way to decorate with less and still feel the magic of the holiday season. I've been using luminaries for years now and they never cease to amaze -- thank you the36thavenue.com and candletech.com! I use vanilla scented paraffin wax (the kind you use for pillar candles) because they won't melt from the heat of the soy wax tealight. So read on and have fun! At first thought you'd think, WHAT?! Essential oils on oily skin? THIS chick is crazy! But alas, I'm only a little loco once a month. 😊 That being said, using essential oils in conjunction with steam is a wonderful option for those of us with irritatingly sebaceous faces. The steam opens pores and encourages the skin to get rid of any deeply embedded gunk and toxins. Next, enter the oil. There's a variety of essential oils that are beneficial for oily skin; including lavender, juniper, myrtle, and bergamot. My personal faves are a combination of lavender, juniper, and tea tree or lavender and tea tree only. Either combination smells delightful but the main point behind adding the oil is to reduce the amount of oil your skin produces. Essential oil on oily skin also aims to balance the skin out. Ok, so if you're anything like me, where there's a will there's a way. Saving a few bucks is important these days so I quickly found that a large glass bowl, some hot water (not boiling, just enough to steam), and 1oz bottles of oil is just as effective as a personal facial sauna. Here's what I do:
My point in all this is to keep a clean face, reduce the oil, and fight off pre-mature aging ....at the same time. Hard cleansers tend to do me more harm than good, so the hope is that sharing a kinder, gentler method will help others too! Oh and did I mention how relaxing it can be? I sleep soooooo much better, so there you go. A dual benefit of facial steaming. Just be mindful to not get to close to the water so you don't get burned and your eyes and nose don't get irritated. Stay beautiful til next time...How cool is this -- clarifying rinse! Vinegar has been long known as a home remedy for all kinds of things. Today I have your the recipe for making your own clarifying hair rinse to free your beautiful locks from any and all gunk and build-up that may be keeping your moisturizers from penetrating and offering the best benefit.
And as a former hair stylist, I know first-hand how annoying build-up on the hair can be. I typically use a clarifying rinse or shampoo every two weeks. The hair tends to get overly dry when you clarify too often. Just be absolutely certain you follow your rinse or shampoo with a moisturizer to replenish all that the rinse has stripped away. You'll feel like you've got a new head of hair! Let's get to it!! Ok, so there are basically two types of oil diffusers I want to touch on. There's ultrasonic and nebulizing; depending on what you want to do will determine which diffuser you'll want to purchase. I took a visit to my local Earth Fare to check out what they have to offer. By far, the majority offered were ultrasonic....personally, I think it was a cost thing. So let's get right into the similarities and differences. I'm so excited by the increase in attention to diffusing oils as a means of home fragrance! I love essential oils and how beneficial they are to our overall health. I, too, use a diffuser. So I feel it's only right to share some thoughts on diffusers and essential oil. After that, I'll share my favorite recipes. Ok, so I've ALWAYS loved Rosemary. It has this pleasantly distinct smell and is perfect for a potted plant at my front door. I use it to keep mosquitoes away and other bugs in the garden on my deck, but I've recently found it's got wonderful antiseptic and astringent properties. I'm sorry....I really am. I don't have a viable recipe for using Rosemary for acne, but rest assured I'm working on it. For now, I'd say use a Rosemary hydrosol---my husband has experienced great results for the acne he tends to get after a fresh haircut and shave. His preferred Rosemary hydrosol is from Mountain Rose Herbs. Check out the links I've included here. Absolutely LOVE their products! Give it a go! Comment below on your personal recipes or regimens!
There are many symptoms of Celiac Disease, and it affects each person differently. Some, like myself, can go without symptoms for years and then suddenly - BOOM. Now you're in the hospital for a range of symptoms, and the actual diagnosis is something that the doctors can't quite put their fingers on.
The Diagnosis
After a few months of doctors, surgeons and never ending questions and pain, I was starting to lose hope. I was referred to a new GE and within 5 minutes of explaining my symptoms, he said "sounds like celiac disease to me, but we'll run tests to confirm." I looked at him like he had three eyes and was from Mars. My response? "So you're telling me that BREAD is causing all of this?" NO WAY. I thought he was crazy, but I went immediately to the lab to get the blood work that he ordered done. I had scheduled an endoscopy the next day, and as the doctor came out to greet me, he confirmed a few things. I was extremely anemic, B6 and B12 levels were nearly depleted, and the blood test and endoscopy confirmed for sure that I had Celiac disease.
Living with Celiac
It is tough to grasp the idea that Celiac causes you to become malnourished. While you finally feel healthy, you body is actually absorbing the food you eat as it heals itself. And so, the weight packed on even with exercise. I've struggled with this over the last year and a half since my diagnosis, but have finally made progress thanks to a new product that I discovered! The bottom line is, living with Celiac can be hard - gluten is everywhere. But you can learn to adjust and live a carefree life without constantly worrying about getting sick.

Celiac in recovery living a carefree lifestyle and blogging about it along the way! Sleep apnea is a condition where you momentarily stop breathing during your sleep from as few as five times to as many as thirty times – or more – per hour. Doctors have been studying sleep apnea for years and have come up with several options for treating sleep apnea. One option is the CPAP machine, which is sort of like an oxygen mask that covers your nose and mouth while you sleep providing you with pressurized oxygen. We all want healthy, beautiful looking skin right? Unfortunately, we always seem to turn to synthetic skin care products which not only are harmful to our skin but many are hazardous to the environment. The more that science makes advances in skincare technology, the more it returns to the "source." We now know that the most effective ingredients to prevent and treat the signs of skin problems are the powerful, natural chemicals found in plants, flowers and trees. This is when I take you to my next secret natural solution to those problematic areas ;)
The age of "change" is coming up. This is the thought that crept up in my head as I pondered my fast approaching birthday. WOW! I'm going to be how old?! I distinctly remember when I was certain ages throughout my life and when I sit and just gaze around me, the age I remember most is the age of my oldest son. What in the.....?! My kids already think I'm the funniest weird lady around, so I'm hoping my life-change wont add to that---if I can help it. SO!....my friend over at La Vie Celeste Skincare is here to shed some plain English light on the subject... In my recent search for some much needed essential oils, I came across some interesting information on Hemp Seed Oil. Our friends over at HippieButter specialize in just that....products made with Hemp Seed Oil.
Ok, so I'm excited to share that we have a guest author this week sharing the benefits of Hemp Seed Lotion! Yay! So read on!
